The fact that I needed all this math for ML reminded me the horrific tales of math and my grumpy teacher in college that always used to remind me how bad I was in Math 🙂 . Over the years it made me realise that it was not that big a deal and more a problem with the way things were taught. ( Sorry state of education system were Teachers/Profs have no clue what/why they are teaching and the lack of associating problems in math to real world ).
Now that its of my chest, lets get into the details of math and what I have on my list of todo/learn.
The only way to store them in your Long Term memory is to associate them with real world problem and cook up your own story around them.
New to Math ?
This video series from njwildberger will really help get started .
My progress and more info about the material — My Progress…
DONE
Linear Algebra
Most of the math related to Linear Algebra is covered in Video Series from MIT . Hopefully this will be all I need in terms of Linear Algebra basics.
My Progress – Finished 10 videos so far . Excellent ! ( 20/10/2017 )
In ProgressDONE !
Statistics
- Have great reviews of Statistics 4th Edition by David Freeman being an absolute gem who want to get started on Statistics. “I think if you need a text that can go into statistical concepts without inducing a migraine, this book is a good choice”. – From a reader 🙂 . Exactly what I need 😛 .
My Progress , Received the book a bit late . Will use this book as a reference when needed. Went through a couple of chapters and found it a good read and style of writing caters to general audience with no math background ! –
Finished the statistics part of the book. Will add a few blog posts and link them here.
Done!!
I plan to get through all the above in next 30 days and blog along what I learn. You will see them in green ( instead of orange ) when done.
Stretch goals…
If you are a Programmer ( Python , which is very much needed if you plan to do something useful in ML. If you are new to python you can pick up one of the courses in Udemy ).
- Bayesian statistics – this is a free book , download here
- Think Statistics – this is a free book as well , download here
Remember I am getting started on ML and someone watching me online does force me into accomplishing the goals I set for myself 🙂 .
